Please share a bit about your background:
The first Lutheran High School Thrift Shop opened in June 1964 at 1673 Douglas Ave. That Northside store is now located at 1455 Douglas Ave., but is temporarily closed due to road construction. The Southside store operated for many years in Uptown and moved to its current location in the Schaefer Plaza in 2010.
What was the inspiration for your business?
Over the past 54 years, the Thrift Shops have provided over $4 million to assist Lutheran High School in providing a first-class, Christ-centered education for our students. Projects have included providing funds toward renovating the science lab and kitchen, paying off expansion mortgages and providing computer technology equipment and scholarships for students. We have more than 70 volunteer workers at the Lathrop store who share in the common goals of helping the school. At the same time, the store provides an enjoyable shopping experience for our customers.
What’s your most popular item(s)?
Ladies clothes are our biggest sellers, followed by housewares.
Books are very popular, too.
Do you have a little-known specialty?
We have a large jewelry section and also often feature very nice artwork.
Can you share a sneak peek to your future plans?
We’re inspired by a quote from a Thrift Shop News bulletin from February 1966: “As we now review this past success we include our prayerful thanks and also realize that we now must be very careful that there is no dwindling of enthusiasm or sincere support.” Fifty-four years later, we plan to continue this same mission.
