Please share a bit about your background:
My Dad, Howard Cook, was “Tiny.” He started working at Nelson’s Shoe Store in the 1950s repairing shoes. In 1958 (the year I was born), he bought the business from Mr. Nelson. He got into selling clothes for big guys because at 450 pounds, he had trouble finding clothes that fit. He didn’t have much money, so he started by buying four shirts from a dealer and selling two of them so he could keep two for himself. Gradually he built the business to offer a full line of clothing for big and tall men. I’ve been in the business since I was 22, when I learned the art of tailoring.
What was the inspiration for your business?
I like it.
What’s your most popular item(s)?
Underware. We stock briefs, boxers and boxer briefs in sizes 2X-10X, dress and athletic socks up to size 20, along with the athletic shirts in tall sizes. Our most popular size for polos and hoodies is 10X, although we go up to 14X and we carry pants up to size 76 with inseams up to 40 inches. We even stock belts up to size 80, other accessories, pajamas and footwear, as well as coats and jackets.
Do you have a little-known specialty?
I still do alterations and other tailoring for our customers. In addition to the store, I supply clothing to the big guys serving time in prison through a separate company called Prison Depot.
Can you share a sneak peek to your future plans?
We’ve been remodeling the store so we can offer even more choices for our customers, while continuing to offer pricing below manufacturer’s suggested retail. We know that it’s hard for big guys to shop online, because they need to try on the clothes to make sure everything fits. We’re also planning to expand our services to sell directly to nursing homes.
