Three music scholarship winners and other guest brass musicians, will perform in the John Hemkes Memorial Scholarship Recital, set for 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 17 at Olympia Brown Unitarian Church, 625 College Ave in Downtown Racine.
Scholarship winners, who were chosen among 14 high school students from Racine and Kenosha counties who auditioned for the 12th annual awards, include first place trumpet player George Siemion from Bradford High School in Kenosha, second place tuba player Sam Strash from Bradford High School and third place euphonium player Jonathan Kroes from Horlick High School.
The memorial scholarship fund supporting the scholarships was established after the death of beloved brass teacher “Johnny” Hemkes in 2006. The fund honors his contributions to brass music in Southeastern Wisconsin during his 70+ years of teaching brass instruments to students from Racine and Kenosha in his “Hemkes Brass Studio” and at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
Also featured at the recital will be performances by Pentad Brass (a brass quintet), the Quist Quartet (trumpets), Mike Pollock on euphonium and Anna Kojovic on piano.
The recital is free, but donations to the Hemkes Memorial Scholarship Fund will be appreciated.
