Bridget and Torben Ovesen
Please share a bit about your background:
Torben grew up in Denmark, where he learned the furniture trade through his father and grandfather’s work in furniture stores and his uncle’s job as a furniture designer. After high school, Torben served an apprenticeship to learn about the materials and products used in furniture making. In 1990, he applied to a work exchange program in hopes of landing in Florida. Instead, he ended up in a store in Kansas City. It was there he met Bridget, who was a student at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. The couple was married in 1992 and moved to New Jersey for a job opportunity at a furniture store and decided to move to Racine when the couple got word in 2005 that the owner of Hans Hansen Scandinavian Furniture wanted to sell his store. At the time, Bridget was pregnant with the couple’s first child and wanted to be closer to family in the Chicago area. Carsten is now 14 and his brother Anders is 12.
