Please share a bit about your background:
My husband John and I have well over 50 years combined experience in the antiques business. In 2006 we established As Time Goes By Estate Sales and began doing on-site estate tag sales. We had a warehouse location in Burlington and moved that to Racine in 2015. While we still do traditional estate sales, mostly in the Racine-Kenosha area, we decided it was time to have a more store-like presence in Racine.
What was the inspiration for your business?
We’d have people come to our estate sales and say “Do you have a store?”, “Do you buy things?”, “Do you do consignment?” That really wasn’t our business model. But it seems especially lately that there are many more situations where an estate sale isn’t a possibility: zero time-frame, too few things to make a decent sale, subdivision restrictions, etc. So that’s where most of our items here come from – places that couldn’t be estate sale sites.
What’s your most popular item(s)?
Furniture! This is a small shop but we manage to fit a lot of furniture in here, large in scale down to little accent pieces. We also sell a lot of vintage jewelry, unusual home decor, and generally just things that aren’t so run-of-the-mill. And vintage vinyl record albums, we can’t keep them in stock.
Do you have a little-known specialty?
We are trying to specialize in Mid-century Modern furniture and accessories 1950s-1970s. It’s challenging though, because it can be hard to find in good condition and the pieces we choose tend to sell very quickly, and you just can’t go right out and replace things. We also try to have local Racine/Kenosha vintage collectibles or historical memorabilia on hand, but again, it can sell very quickly.
Can you share a sneak peek to your future plans?
We hope to be open more hours, especially for the summer months.
