As summer comes to a close, there is plenty of activity around the Real Racine office preparing for the fall season.
The empty nesters are out and about and we’re seeing them come into the visitor center from around the country. You just never know who will show up. We just had a woman from California stop by who is driving one of the trucks for the Elton John tour. She’s wanted to know what there was to do in the area for the next week or so prior to the concert in Milwaukee on Oct. 19. She is one of 18 truck drivers hauling equipment for the show. Our Director of Visitor Services, Peggy Anderson, was only too happy to help her out.
As I write this article, Cari Greving, our Events/Marketing Director, is in Sarasota, Florida this week for the Australian Rules Football national championship. She was invited there by the organization to help out with this year’s event following the success of it last year here at the SCORe grounds in Franksville. They loved it here, and they loved her work. Earlier this summer we hosted the U.S. Women’s national team tryouts for a second time with about 100 women from throughout the country participating. We hope to see this group many times in the future!
We continue our partnership with Racine County Economic Development Corporation (RCEDC) on the social media component for the Racine County Talent Acquisition initiative. Brianna Wright, our Social Media Director is working with their staff on content and placement. While it’s too early to point out any direct successes, indications are that we are reaching our target audience in the Chicago area with our message and that an increasing number of them are clicking on the ad on their cellphones to find out more information. They are being directed to the job board at greaterracinecounty.com.
Our Group Tour Director, Eileen Arnold, just returned from a 24-hour trip to Cleveland where she and several other Wisconsin destinations met with about 175 group travel leaders to encourage them to bring their groups to Wisconsin.
My wife and I took a short vacation last week to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was exactly what the doctor ordered to recharge the batteries. For years I’ve been one of those people who leave a lot of vacation time on the table at the end of the year. This year I promised myself that I would take more days off and get a bit closer to a “work/life balance.”
Over 700 million vacations days go unused in the U.S. annually. That could be why people are so stressed out. Go ahead, you have permission to take your days off that you’ve earned. On my first day back, I spoke to a bus tour group from Kamloops, British Columbia who were in town for two nights as part of a 10-day Wisconsin trip. They saw the Windpoint Lighthouse, SC Johnson and Lehmann’s Bakery.
There’s never a boring day around the Real Racine offices.
