Welcome to Belle City Magazine!
Hello, I’m Katie Matteson, co-publisher and editor of Belle City Magazine, along with my husband, Carl Matteson, co-publisher and art director. We launched Belle City Magazine in July 2016 to tell Racine’s great stories, provide new advertising channels for you to promote your business or organization and inspire pride among those who live and work here.
Our mission is to tell the stories of interesting local people, learn about what happens behind the scenes, explore new and old places and share the images of daily life in a community known for its beautiful lakefront, ethnic diversity and innovations.
I’m inspired to tell these stories because Racine is the place I grew up (as Katie Humphrey) with my parents and two brothers on the Northside. After graduating from Horlick High School, I went on to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside to study Music, then transferred to UW-Milwaukee and earned a degree in Mass Communication-Public Relations.
My first professional job was as a reporter at the East Troy News, a small weekly newspaper in a community about 30 miles west of here. I expected to stay exactly one year in order to gain the experience necessary to move on to bigger and better things. Turns out that the bigger and better things happened right there in East Troy, where I built a life for 30 years.
I met Carl in East Troy and we worked together there for more than 20 years. He grew up in Olean, New York and Lake Geneva and is a graduate of Carroll College. We created a variety of publications for local businesses and organizations. We even established our own community newspaper, the East Troy Times, which we ran for 10 years before selling it in 2008.
Since we sold the paper, we’ve each done some interesting things. However, nothing we did was as satisfying as creating something together that makes a positive contribution to our community. So we decided to do it here in Racine – kind of a homecoming and new frontier at the same time.
Our vision is to facilitate conversations with fellow Racinians to talk about all the good stuff going on in our community – 100% positive. We hope you enjoy it!
